Anemonefish

Anemonefish ( Clownfish) spend their entire settled like in association with giant anemones and are found only in the Indo-Pacific. 28 species are know : 13 occur in South-east Asia. The fish benefit by having a safe home where they can feed and nest without being attacked. The anemone stings intruders. yet the clownfish can ‘ bathe’ freely in the tentacles without being stung because of their protective mucous covering. Not only is the layer thicker than usual. But its chemical make-up prevents the anemone’s stinging cells from being activated.
Anemonefish live in pairs or groups and have a social life that involves sex change and female dominance. The female is the largest, and she controls the sexual development of others. The next biggest functions as a male, but has undeveloped ovaries and immediately changes sex should the dominant female disappear. At the same time. the dominant juvenile develops into a male. This means that a breeding pair is virtually always present and that egg laying can go on uninterrupted. A nest may be visible at the bass of the anemone. This guarded for about a week before the eggs hatch. The larvae spend about a week floating in the plankton, and then seek out a suitable host by smell, rather that by sight.
